The combination of technology advancement, government incentive, and stakeholder demands are threatening the basic foundations of central grid and pipeline based energy utilities. New distributed energy technology has achieved grid parity in many jurisdictions across North America leaving the traditional utility with its centrally based asset infrastructure vulnerable to competitive threat.

Similarly, customers, whether they are large business or home owners, want energy that aligns with their social sensibilities without a cost premium. Sourcing renewable energy through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or onsite distributed generation adds a new layer of responsibility on organizations that is time consuming and fraught with new business, legal and technical challenges.
